Resveratrol and acetylsalicylic acid have anticancer effects

It is reported that researchers from France have found that resveratrol, a component contained in aspirin and red wine, can destroy tetraploid cells and thus fight cancer.

It is known that normal cells have only two sets of chromosomes, and tetraploid cells have four sets of duplicated chromosomes. These cells are closely related to the lesions in the early stage of cancer. Tetraploid cells are common abnormal cells, and the body can usually handle these abnormal cells by itself. However, there are a large number of tetraploid cells in the early stage of some cancers, such as cervical cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer. The number of these cells has exceeded the automatic processing capacity of the body, thus causing cancer.

In this study, researcher Guido and his colleagues from Gustav Ross research center in France tested whether aspirin and resveratrol could eliminate tetraploid cells and exert effective anti-cancer benefits without destroying normal cells.

Previous studies have shown that aspirin and resveratrol may reduce the risk of cancer. However, these studies have been questioned. The research team led by Jiduo gave the genetically modified cancer mice a mixture of aspirin and red wine. The results showed that the number of tetraploid cells and the risk of colon cancer in the genetically modified mice were higher than those in the control group. However, when aspirin or resveratrol were given respectively, the number of tetraploid cells in mice decreased, and the risk of cancer was also decreased.

Researchers believe that aspirin and resveratrol act by activating adenosine phosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK). The researchers found that the mixture of these two components can increase the activity of AMPK in normal cells and tetraploid cells, leading to tetraploid cell death, while other cells are not affected.

Overall, this study showed that the chemoprotective effects of aspirin and resveratrol included early clearance of tetraploid cancer cells.
